Notes From the Underground Chili Cook-Off

Beans. Legend has it they are a magical fruit. Last night the pretty young things of Williamsburg came out to Barcade to celebrate beans in all their glory at the Brooklyn Underground Chili Extravaganza, also known as BRUCE. Judges were picked at random earlier in the week and tie-breakers went to the most cleverly named dishes. Results and pics from last night’s festivities after the jump.

John McCain would not approve of this chili.

And the winners are …

Chili champion Greg Erskine won with his “The Handsome Barnyard (No Furry),” which contained duck, lime, coconut milk and magic.

Bartender and second place winner Claudia DeMairo’s “McCain’s a Turkey…Chili!” was made of chili piquin, tomatillos and duck fat. Third place winner Jeff Rush’s secret ingredients were Jack Daniels, cinnamon and apples in his “Ball Poppin’, Gun Shootin’ PCP Veggie Mayhem.”

Chrysanthe Tenentes of Brooklyn Based with Amit Gupta of Photojojo.

Contestant Karol Lu of Billiardsburg and Cathy Erway of Not Eating Out in New York.
