Eugene Has No Problem With Toby Young

gene1Eugene Villiatora was one of two chefs to get the boot on last night’s Top Chef, for a fried fish with a tomato, basil, and daikon pasta that failed to impress Tom Colicchio as anything other than bad. We spoke with Gene just a few minutes ago.

Gene, I was surprised you didn’t last longer. I expected you to go the distance.

I was surprised too.

So what happened? I didn’t get why they didn’t think your basil, tomato, and daikon flavor profile didn’t hang together. It’s not like daikon has any flavor at all!

I’ve made that dish many times and I like the flavors. With daikon, sometimes people aren’t used to having it hot. You either hate it or you don’t. If it’s not rinsed right it can have a pungent taste.

So looking back, you must feel like you should have just done regular spaghetti. Right?

Well, I wanted to do an Asian noodle of some kind. Maybe an egg noodle or some soba noodles. But I said, you know what? Let’s get creative with this.

That’s the spirit! What about Toby Young? I hated him with a white-hot passion, and couldn’t wait for him to not be onscreen. What’s this guy’s deal? Is he trying to be some kind of British Don Rickles or something? All his comments seemed completely canned.

My initial reaction to him was that he was like one of the judges on American Idol. Of course, he was rooting for me on last night’s show. Anyone who roots for me to stay on the show is OK with me. But he was pretty harsh. I’m sorry I didn’t get to see the rest of what he said to other people.

Well, you can always watch the show on TV like the rest of us, Gene!

    Although my wife, Dr. E., makes a delectible sauteed radish side dish (one of my personal favorites), the idea of daikon “spaghetti” with pasta sauce did not enchant me. Offputting, actually.

    More importantly, Mr. Cutlets, you negelected to ask Eugene how he managed to overcook his fish and twist it into that hideously grotesque shape.

    Why that doughy British blowhard supported Eugene’s returning to the show is beyond my understanding. Sorry.

    Then again, what would Louise Wyers (also known as “therealchiffonade” and “chiff0nade”) know about anything British?

    She has never been outside of her flat in Brooklyn until husband #4 dumped her in Clearwater, Florida.

    Oh yes, I did hear that her latest hug, ‘Big Bear’ moved her to Atlanta to escape some ‘legal problems’ according to the Clearwater authorities.
