
The Ripper Ends His Romance With Toaster Ovens
The toaster oven had to know this day would come. It’s brief, glorious dalliance with the dashing Eric Ripert has come to an end. The Le Bernardin chef has now devoted 13 wepisodes of his fantastic Avec Eric site to the glories of America’s most underappreciated kitchen appliance, and the last one just came online. It’s for a zuchinni mint parmesan fritata (”Ayggs. Zookeeni. Ah toaster oven. Eight minutes. A great frittata!”) and is every bit as interesting, useful, and utterly ridiculous as you might expect. Why couldn’t this series go on forever? We never found out how the Ripper makes pizza bialys or escolar en croute in the toaster oven. Soon, we are told, Avec Eric will take a new direction involving interactive parties, and that sounds nice, but there’s something about seeing a three-star Michelin chef in love with a toaster oven that’s not easily replaced.
